Happy Labor Day to all of you hard workers out there, from all of us hard at work here at Lionel. Railroads have played a major role in the history of labor since their beginning. From unionization to retirement benefits, company towns to political reforms – you can thank our railroaders for paving the way more often than not.
There is a romantic quality to life on the rails for sure, but there is no denying that it is a demanding and dangerous job. And of course it’s not all engineers and conductors out there either. From section gangs to secretaries, it takes an army to keep the trains moving. (Literally – the Pennsylvania Railroad alone once employed more people than the United States Army!)
Join us all week on Facebook as we highlight some of the different jobs in railroading. And thank you all for the hard work that you do. (And thank you to Donnell Allen and Nick Zmijewski from the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania for posing for these shots!)
