Command Control and a Turntable

Although Lionel doesn’t currently offer a turntable in our track line, that doesn’t mean you can’t have one on your layout or control it with your Lionel TMCC or LEGACY system. For this project, we’ll show you the steps involved to convert an ATLAS-O turntable to command control using a Mini Commander II from Electric RR Co. This project will also prove that there is really nothing you can’t do with command control if you use your imagination!

We’ve used an Electric RR Mini Commander II in this installation. Essentially, this turns the turntable into a locomotive that can be addressed and controlled like any other engine with your command control system. This is not the only option however. You could also use an ASC or AMC and program the table as an accessory. Any of these options will work.

Installing the Receiver

The Mini Commander II fits easily into the “shed” motor housing with the turntable. We attached ours to the underside of the roof. In addition to basic wire connections to the motor leads, we made two other additions to the controller which required minor modifications to the shed. First, a small hole was made for the Program/Run switch. This switch could be concealed inside the shed, you’ll just have to lift it off for programming.

Secondly, a pair of holes were drilled in the front of the shed for a green and red LED. These provide an indication if the table is going to move clockwise or counterclockwise. Again, this modification is not absolutely necessary, but it does make the operation more convenient.

The only other wire connections are to connect the motor leads to the motor and supply AC Hot and Ground from your track supply (18 Volts). To see this installation in more detail, just watch this video:

Programming the Receiver

Since the control system will see this turntable like a locomotive, you can program it the same way you’d program a locomotive. Just remember to program it to operate as a TMCC locomotive, not LEGACY. You can assign any address you’d like.

Operations

Operate the turntable just like any other locomotive. Select the address and turn up the power. Use the direction button to stop or reverse the bridge. That’s it!

Whether you are looking at a turntable, or another motorized accessory, you have many options when it comes to adding command control. So let your imagination run wild, and let your TMCC and LEGACY system run your whole layout.
